Hello again friends. Happy Tuesday! I’m happy to be joining my friends for another Seasons of Simplicity, Christmas series. Hosted by my friend Krista.
We start with some Christmas DIY’s. My contribution today is this adorable chunky knit clay vase DIY. It’s super easy to make and perfect for this season and
throughout winter.
I’ve mentioned before that one of my favourite mediums is clay and though I haven’t played with clay in a long time, I still have a deep love for it.
I used children’s modeling clay but you can also use polymer clay for something a little more durable.
I have used this ‘braiding’ method before for THIS pie. I loved how it turned out.
I do have to tell you that working with dough or polymer gives you more even results. The Crayola modelling clay is not as sticky as polymer clay or dough so the strands
tend to unravel a little.
When you watch the video, you will see that I place a jar at either side of the clay to hold the ‘twirl’ in place.
Here is the video:
Super easy right? I hope you enjoyed this little DIY. Please don’t forget to check out the rest of the DIY’s below.
Thank you so much for stopping by.
much love,
Lucy

Do you bake the clay? Will these hold up if not?
Sheila says
I found another site that indicates you do bake it. They used tin cans as the base. That makes a lot more sense now. I made it and didn’t bake it but clay got dented up.

This is beautiful! Where did you get the jars from? And how long do you let it sit to dry or do you bake it? I can’t wait to try to make it!
Angela says
Hi, they look like Ikea glass jars.
Hope this helps

So gorgeous with all of the greenery! I pinned it to my holiday board. Love it!

OMG – Just LOVE this. But lots of questions —do they hold up to save? Do you bake or just let dry? I guess we all have these questions, because we LOVE what you made! What would be your advice for the BEST product to use and how to finish off. Thanks for some more inspiration!
Jenn says
How creative! This looks beautiful.

How cute!! I know what I’m giving for Christmas!! Your video made it look super simple. The way you made the braid was genius!! I’ve got a few questions:
I noticed you put water on the jar in some areas, is it needed? Have any of the “braids” come off? Thank you for sharing your talents!
Rhonda Hallstrom says
Super cute!! I love the braids.
The pie looks amazing can’t wait for thanksgiving !
Lindi says
This is the cutest! What a creative idea! When I saw the little picture, I thought the vase was store bought – I didn’t realize until I clicked over that it was the DIY! Looks amazing!
Krista says
I love the texture and how cute that vase turned out! Thank you for sharing with is on the blog hop.

sheila says
I made this and while it’s cute, it easily gets misshapen and marked up because the clay doesn’t harden so I don’t plan to make again. Too bad because it’s a fun look.
Joan Hornung says
Sheila, I was afraid of this – although I love the look and wanted to make one, there were questions, including mine, and we never got any kind of answer. This happened to me regarding another project here.as well. I didn’t realize that questions are not answered here, therefore we cannot really do any of these projects unless they are so simple we don’t have a question! Sorry it didn’t come out well for you.
sheila says
Joan – I found another blog where they created a very similar craft. The person used tin cans as a base and baked it according to the directions on the polymer clay package — so try that! I made mine using glass and I don’t know if the glass would’ve held up in the oven, but I would feel totally comfortable doing that with tin cans. It is super cute, so I’ll likely try again.
Joan says
Sheila, Oh Thanks. That sounds like a good idea. I kind of gave up on this since our questions were never answered. I was wondering if this always happens. Does anyone know if the questions on projects are not addressed on this site? No sense reading up or looking at this if so. This is the second time I have tried to ask a question….no response.

These are so cute, want to try for sure! Thanks for sharing!
