Hello again friends. So here I am, smelling like skunk surrounded by bowls of vinegar, coffee grounds and millions of scented candles. I spoke about it a bit yesterday, but to give you a quick run down,
Brody got sprayed by a skunk and it’s actually given me a new respect for skunks because holy cow, what an amazing form of defence. Hubby couldn’t even go to work because he also smells like skunk.
It’s a little funny but not really.
But today I wanted to share with you a few changes for Spring in our home tour hosted by my friend Krista.
I was trying to add a little bit of green and Bella said to me “stop trying to make green a thing” lol. I’m just into it right now…ha
I swear you guys, I’m so antsy about this living room space. I just can’t seem to get it right. I actually want to open a big window in this room and see if it makes a difference.
Here’s the little Dollar Store gnome that I spray painted .
Here he is before…
Let’s take a look at the kitchen because it’s what I’m most excited about…
I painted my cabinets and I love them. I also changed the hardware as you can see. The colour is Midnight by Canadian Tire and it’s extremely similar to Benjamin Moore’s Midnight. 🙂
I ordered the hardware from Wayfair but the paint was a spur of the moment thing…
I also spray painted the pendants lights to coordinate with the hardware…
I really love how it looks but now I’m debating if I should do the top cabinets as well. What do you think? Here are more photos…
I painted the pantry all the way up and I really like it. Which is making me feel like I should paint the rest as well.
Wayfair actually has a really great home renovation section and there are currently some great sales.
Let’s move on to the family room which is adjacent to the kitchen….
I added a few touches of this green/turquoise color…
I ordered this pouf before Christmas and it only arrived last week…ugh. It was a great price but it took waaayyy too long to arrive so I’m not going to promote the site where I got it from.
I added a little more white to the shelves and I don’t mind the contrast at all.
Here is a full room shot. For some reason, this photo makes the room look so narrow but it gives you a better idea of the space.
Thank you so much for stopping by today. Please let me know what you think about painting the rest of the cabinets. I’d love your input.

Hi Lucy, I am so in love with the dark paint in your family room and in your kitchen. I am not a designer, but two toned kitchens are so in right now, that I think maybe leave it the way it is for a while, and then when you need to change again, paint the top cabinets. I do absolutely adore the dark cabinets! I am picking paint colors ASAP and would so greatly appreciate if you could share the color of the dark paint on the fireplace and built-ins and the kitchen cabinets! Is it the same color? Please please please share! Thank you!! Your home is such an inspiration
Lucy says
Hi…I’m sorry, I should have said it on the post, I’ve updated it. The paint is called Midnight by Canadian Tire but Benjamin Moore’s Midnight is almost identical. Hope that helps. xo
Tracy says
I love the combo! What color are your family room walls? Thank you!
Ly says
Can I know how many feet is your living room height? I got 8 feet living room and really want to paint the fireplace area dark like yours but I just afraid of making the room look shorter
Bethanne says
Yes please share the type of paint you used. I love that matte finish and may get brave enough to do my kitchen cabinets.
Lucy says
Hi…I’m sorry, the paint is called Midnight by Canadian Tire but Benjamin Moore’s Midnight is almost identical. Hope that helps. xo
Shawn says
Love the pouf! The cabinets look amazing! Paint the rest.
Lynne says
I love the two tones of the cabinets. The contrast of dark and light is always nice. Plus keeping the top ones white makes them almost disappear so your room looks bigger. I’m a plants everywhere person too! For spring I also like to add pink with my green. It just seems so springy. Love your home.
Lucy Bergling says
I love the hardware you used, can you give me the information for the round knobs on your cabinets, I’d love to put them on my cabinets. I recently painted mine white and love the look of these. Thanks so much.
Lucy says
Sorry Lucy, I thought I had linked them. They’re now linked above xo but here you go – http://bit.ly/2UzUftT
Sharon says
Love the contrast of the white cabinets with the dark! Please leave! Also, try a himalayin salt lamp for your smell. They have them everywhere now. I got one at Walmart and one at hobby lobby. Of course I’ve never tried it on skunk🥴, but if you read about the lamp, it cleans the air.🥰
Sue Calfo says
I love the two tone look. I am not a person who necessarily likes “what’s in” but I am very happy and will stay with the two toned look for a long time-lol. The dark panty is enough- keep the rest of the white cabinets- they add light and openness, while the dark color on the bottom and pantry ground the room and add interest. If you decide you really need to paint the top cabinets us a light gray or another neutral.
Lori says
Hi Lucy!
Is the color the Midnight shade from Canadian Tire there…here Benjamin Moore? I love the color of the cabinets. You make it seem so easy to do as I remember reading you changed out those fireplace shelves from white to Midnight then back to white….that’s a lot of time painting? Or do you have a trick? I’m trying to decide on a interior back door color for our home and I need a bit of navy blue but want darker shade so this Midnight may work for me. I say keep the white cabinets with the painted darker color surrounding. This gives impact and when you want a bit of spring white for decor you have it..you get it both ways and it looks wonderful! I do have a feeling you’ll paint them though..Lol!! Please share some painting tips as well…do I have to take my door down to paint it? Removing the knobs won’t do? ARGH! Lol
PS..sorry about the skunk…been there..it’s awful!
Lucy says
Yes it’s Midnight . I just can’t sit still so I get bored and paint…lol Thank you so much for the feedback. I think I’ll do just that xo
Krista says
WOW Lucy!! Unbelievable – I was so surprised to see this big change. I LOVE it – the kitchen looks absolutely amazing! And I love the gold hardware. I’m getting so excited about our kitchen renovation… we are doing grey cabinets. I hope I like them once they are in!
Jayne Z says
The dark bottom cabinets pop because of the upper white cabinets. If you paint them all the same color, you won’t get that same light/bright look. I love the look as it is now. The only thing I’m surprised at is that you didn’t paint your Kitchen Aid Mixer Gold 🙂 Always enjoy reading your posts.
By the way — we always washed our dog in tomato juice (and then rinse of course) if they had a run in with a skunk. Not sure if it’s the acid in the tomato juice, but it only takes one or two times.
Suzanne says
I think the contrast is beautiful, I wouldn’t change a thing! Your home is lovely…
Pam says
When our dog was sprayed, our Veterinarian recommended a mixture of Dawn dishwashing soap, baking soda and peroxide. Worked so much better than the tomato juice which hadn’t helped at all. Check with your Vet. My kitchen cabinets were a dark brown when we bought our present house. A big dark hole in an otherwise bright House on a lake. After painting them white I got such positive comments and I was much happier! I do love your two-toned. I’d leave it!
Sue says
Have you tried Nok-Out? This is highly recommended for all odors.
Amy Kaminski says
I would not paint the rest of the cabinets. It’s so beautiful just the way it is and if you are craving light it might make everything too dark. You are a wonderful designer!
Michelle says
This is so beautiful! Apologies if it’s listed elsewhere, but where is the kitchen runner from? It’s gorgeous with the two-toned cabinets.
Dee Dee Walker says
I’m sooo in love with your house! Love the green you picked! It’s EXACTLY the color scheme I’m into right now. I’m about to move to Europe and, I can’t tell you why, but this is just what I had in mind for my new decor. Funny, I’m usually Country French. You are very talented. Keep up the work.
P.S. I would love to share you work on my instagram page if that is all right?
Happy Decorating,
Dee

Your home is perfect! You’ve done a tremendous job in decorating. Love the Midnight on lower cabinets. Where did you get your kitchen rug? I have a few sprigs of flowering Quince in my adjoining Sunroom off my two-tone of Black and white kitchen. Your rug is perfect. I change accent colors and rugs with the season. Thanks for any info you can supply. Your kitchen is PERFECT, as is. Sorry about the skunk.
Thanks, Vicki
Teddee Grace says
I didn’t check all of the comments so someone may have already mentioned this, but I’ve always read that tomato juice will counteract the smell of skunk. Sounds like all of you will have to bathe in it! So sorry for your dog. Your house looks great!
lyn says
love the kitchen as. You will be happy you did. I think after a short perusal of comments – the ‘leave it as is’ comments win!!!!
also loved the kitchen runner. Where did you find it?
deborah kaempf says
love the midnight color personally, green notes are spot on!
btw, my German wire-haired pointer never met a skunk he didn’t like, after trying everything… douche is the only thing that really worked
Marsha says
I love the dark colour and feel you’ve achieved balance between the family room and the kitchen by painting the lowers the same Dark colour. I fear that it may be too much if you were to paint the uppers out as well. But it is only paint.
Kris says
I think you would feel like you lived in a cave if you painted the upper cabinets the same color. The contrast looks nice–why mess with success?

Lucy,
LOVE your Kitchen!
The cabinets are gorgeous! Great choice in hue and hardware!
Since you are asking, I’d paint the cabinet above the refrigerator white.
Leave the island and the pantry the darker color.
The backsplash is what caught my eye!
So sorry to hear about the skunk encounter.
Your green is so~o~o inspiring!

I loved your post- it was wonderful on so many levels. First of all, your writing: I actually chuckled out loud reading about the skunk thing and I rarely do that. I know, not really funny, but you made it so. And secondly, everything you do is beautiful (even though you always second-guess yourself!). People think I’m creative, but you have more creativity in your pinky finger than I do in my whole being!
And the gold leprechaun is brilliant!
Amber says
Love this, Lucy! I’m amazed at the difference the spray paint made in the dollar store gnome! I’ll definitely be trying that!
Dannyelle says
Lucy everything looks beautiful, as always. I love your pops of green for spring. And the kitchen looks amazing with all your changes.
Nancy says
Love the contrast in your kitchen! There are so many “gold” or brass looking spray paints. Your choice matches perfectly with the hardware. Can you share what brand/colour you used?
Thanks a bunch!
Kara says
Yes, please share, I’m dying to know what fabulous spray paint that is also. 🙂
Sonya says
My only thought on your idea of painting your kitchen uppers was that I thought you had recently posted about the idea of repainting your living or family room cabinets … if that is the case, maybe you should hold off on the upper kitchen cabinets for a bit.
Patrice says
I agree with the commenter who said just paint the cabinets atop the fridge white and leave it at that! I think it’s the white that makes the dark paint look so cool & edges. Perhaps I missed this on previous posts but can you share the source of your gorgeous leather sofa? Beautiful rooms, thank you for sharing!

Hi Lucy,
Sorry about Brody & your husband!
I Love the upper white cabinets! So fresh & clean! Personally I think the black would make your kitchen too dark. Your kitchen is beautiful!
I have always loved your home! So cheerful & Light, fresh & clean look.

I absolutely LOVE all of the changes you have made to your home Lucy! Your kitchen is a dream. We just recently had our cabinets painted white, but now you’ve got me thinking about painting the bottom ones darker…it’s such a gorgeous look! P.S. Sorry to hear about Brodie…ugh what a stink those skunks make!
Cheryl Foley says
Your home is so beautiful. I would not change a thing! I love what you’ve done there.

Hi Lucy,
Kitchen is just beautiful! Do you have a tutorial on how to paint the cabinets??? You said you did, but did you have someone do it for you or did you do it yourself? If so, many of us could benefit on your tips on that !
Thanks!

Hi Lucy,
Not sure if you’ve mentioned this already but do you also know the name of the white paint on your top cabinets? And I was also wondering where you got the wooden bowl that’s filled with lemons in your pictures. I absolutely love the contrast in your kitchen, you should keep it like that at least for a little while! Thank you
Linda Phillips says
Hi Lucy. I love your kitchen with the top cabinets white and the bottoms dark blue. I have a question for you relating to your floor covering. I noticed your lovely off white floor in your kitchen, but also noticed you have wood stained flooring in your adjoining family room. I have engineered stained floor in my adjoining family room and would like to have a complimentary wood floor in my kitchen. Of course, my family room flooring is no longer available and most decorating advice is to not butt up two different colors. Do you like what you did? I can’t really see the two joined together. Any advice?
Erika says
Hi Lucy,
I love the kitchen cabinet color and was just wondering what finish you had chosen in the paint. Thank you!

Also do you mind sharing where you got the kitchen runner rug from?
Thanks!

Hey! Your rooms are gorgeous! Did you paint the cabinety in the family room the same midnight color as your kitchen? The color scheme you chose with it is so beautiful and gives it an entirely different feel so I wasn’t sure, but I love that color so I wanted to check….
Jody Resnik says
Is the midnight color a blue or black base? Are the cabinets in the living room green?

Hi Lucy! Beautiful home. I know you stated the cabinets were Midnight by Ben Moore, but is your family room the same color? Also, can you share which white you used on the living room walls as well? Your family room is goals!
Veronika says
Very nice job on the cabinets! In the process of doing my own and on the hunt for the perfect rug.
Where did you get yours in the kitchen? Have come across several I really love but most of them are a tad too light. We have several small children and wanting something darker that won’t show dirt or spills etc.
New to your blog and love what I see!
Thanks!

Hi there! Can you give more detail on your kitchen brass drawer pulls? It seems the links don’t take me to an exact model, but general drawer pulls sold on Wayfair. Also wondering what color white you used on your kitchen uppers and the kitchen walls & window trim. What type of paint finish do you use on cabinets? Do you know the style of your backsplash? It’s hard to tell from the photos, but is your countertop pure white, some marbling or speckles? I’m assuming they are quartz? I basically want to copy your entire kitchen for my kitchen remodel! 🙂
Would love to get all the details so I can have a beautiful kitchen like yours!
Thanks, AJ

Oh my goodness, I am in love with your home!! Thanks for sharing these trends! I am not design-savvy at all, but I am attempting to “makeover” my home bit by bit this year starting with the kitchen. I already have a cabinet painting appointment scheduled and then I’m planning on repainting our kitchen walls myself…I’d love to get new countertops eventually too. My first instinct for my cabinets was to choose white paint, but after reading your tips, I think I’d actually love two tone cabinets!

Hi there,
Came across your place on Pinterest it’s beautiful, I love the lower cabinets and am struggling with the whole two town question myself! However, I noticed your flooring and wondered if you could tell me or send me the exact link of the product and color if it still exists, I’m about to remodel and just found out a renters cat damaged my wood floor:( thank you so much in advance, def keep the cabinets painted as is btw, its gorgeous but no matter what you clearly have good taste so good luck!

Hi Lucy,
I absolutely love your style and that Midnight color and finish. I went to canadian tire and that chip is no longer available so based on the dates on the comments of this post we guessed it was Premiers 2016 color so I got a sample but it pulls more violet black/gray. Do you know the exact color code or number? And what paint finish did you use?
Thank you kindly
Katie
