Hello Craftberry Bush friends – I am grateful to be back and sharing with you this week. I very much enjoy the process of setting a table for company; if it be a simple weeknight meal or for a special occasion. A runner or tablecloth is an easy way to add decor and interest without having to splurge on many pieces. It can be kept on your table day to day or used only for specific events.
Today’s linen project is inexpensive, simple and fuss free. To create your runner or tablecloth just complete these easy steps…
Here is what you will need –
- Fabric Scissors
- 100% linen fabric, sized to your preference. For a runner it should measure around 16 inches wide by 90 inches long and for a cloth similar to mine
(which only covers a portion of the table as it’s purpose is for texture and decor) it should measure 54 inches long by 34 inches wide.
Here is how you will make it –
- Cut material to the correct size. The cleaner and straighter the cut, the more consistent the frayed threads will be.
- Throw the newly cut tablecloth or runner in the washing machine on cold and then dry. Cut off the stray threads and iron.
- The more you wash the linen the more it frays. Therefore, this works best as a runner, occasional tablecloth or decorative piece because it does not need to be washed after each use. If you wanted to make dinner napkins this way, you could simply sew along the frayed sides so they would no longer fray once washed.
Welcoming people into your home (whether they are those living there or friends visiting) is like sharing a piece of your heart. After all, isn’t our home where the heart is?
Here at our table I carefully lay out my new linen cloth. I stack on earth toned dishes paired with mismatched kitchen towels used for dinner napkins. I try and remember the proper etiquette to set out silverware and straighten each fork in line.
I spend the morning gathering blackberries from the thistled bushes and snip some branches with blueberries to be enjoyed at the table. Each drinking glass is filled with those very juicy bursts of fruit and some chilled water. I leave room for eyes to connect and hands to be gathered for prayer. I ponder what conversations will be made at this table over our warm meals.
Dinners here in this place are special. Sometimes they fill the air with aromatic smells, vibrant laughter and others with concerned tears when talking over the day’s events. I yearn to slow time down and this is the place we do just that. Isn’t it magical to have a way to truly savor time?! We stop what we are doing to talk and to share. It soothes our souls to make that effort and is a very important sacrifice when stepping away from the noise of the world.
Just like the very linen cloth draped over our table, hosting a dinner for loved ones doesn’t have to be uptight or even fancy. Use what you have and that speaks to your heart. Know that those gathered around the table with you are there to enjoy company and nothing more. Hosting is truly an act of giving and a beautiful gift that does not require a lot of money or gourmet ingredients. Nourish the hearts of those you love with this special act and they will feel like royalty enjoying a monumental feast. You in return will be gifted with the joy that accompanies giving in this very way.
Wishing you all a wonderful week and thank you so much for having me Lucy ~

It’s crazy how something so simple can look so awesome. This would look great paired with that tobacco basket you made as a center piece, so cute! Also, where can I find those beige bowls you have on your table setup? I need some of those in my life!
Annie says
Thank you so much Taiya amd Lucy’s basket would be perfect there – I can not wait to make one! The bowls are from Ballard Designs – thanks again!

Lovely sentments reminding me AGAIN of what God is impressing upon me latley…offer yourself to people, without fear of what they will think of me. Invite people in regardless of wha the house looks like. People want connection and love, not a production. Be genuine and pour love out! Thank You for the post!
Annie says
Thanks so much for sharing Pam and I too have to remind myself of this very thing ~ I really appreciate you taking the time to comment. Thank you.

Your writing made me feel as though I was getting ready to sit down and enjoy a meal at your table, Annie. The scene you created is every bit as beautiful as your runner.

Your table looks so pretty! My mom is always worried that our house doesn’t look as nice as it used to when her and dad were able to do things around the house. Now I am the caregiver and I do a lot of it but I can’t do everything. I keep saying that if people want to come over, wether its family or friends, they came to see us, not talk about how the house looks. They know we can’t do what we used to. I know God feels the same way about us. God has been so good to all of us. I want to come and eat at your pretty table. What time is dinner? LOL
Annie says
Gail, thank you so much and for sharing your heart. It is all so true what you said, and that is the very purpose behind spending time with those you love. Yes I agree about God’s feelings towards us as well. Hope you have a wonderful weekend ~
