A photo can stir emotions and feelings of times past. A single image transports
us back in time to that specific moment where part of your story was written. |
To me, a photo is like a refreshing illustration that breaks the
monotony of the black and white print of our book. It is through a
photo you see the true colours of your life; where the characters are
given a face and the setting is no longer left to your imagination.
It is through those images that we are are
fortunate to relive a moment and keep it alive.

When I set out to review the new Canon SL1, I didn’t appreciate it
would become so much more than a review. It became one of those life
lessons that are so often written all around us, but we tend to miss.
It was a reminder that to write a good story, you have to pick up a pen
and write. It takes effort and willingness to step out of your comfort zone.

Painting ‘en plein air’ (or painting outdoors) is one of those
things I grew up watching my uncles do. I often thought of doing it with
our children, but never made either the time or effort to do.

our children, but never made either the time or effort to do.
My intent was to create an event and capture it with photos,
but I ended up doing so much more than that. I was reminded of
that special and unique bond I have with each of my children,
and in particular, the bond I have with my daughter through art.
In that moment – surrounded by nature and the peacefulness
of silence, broken only by scurrying squirrels and the
chorus of birds – I had forgotten all about a camera review.
In that moment, I was actually writing a story – a good story.
Being replayed in my heart with these photos, I feel blessed to have been
given the opportunity to test the camera, yet taken away so much more.

But as this is a review of the new SL1, I will say I am
absolutely smitten with it. The smallest DSLR on the market is not only
convenient, but also gives you the full benefits and quality of a DSLR.
This little gem actually weighs as little as a water bottle.
The camera has so many features, I couldn’t showcase them all.
But one of the features I loved the most is the touch screen functionality
and ability to pinpoint exactly where you want your focal point to be by
simply looking through the screen and touching it.

If you are a little more familiar with your manual controls, you can also
adjust your settings from the touch screen, which I find so convenient.
And for those not overly familiar with the “ins and outs” of a DSLR, the
auto smart mode will enable you to get the right shot every time.

Although taken on an overcast day, the images are vivid and vibrant.
This particular shot was taken with the 40mm, which is perfect for portraits
or food photography. It gives you the beautiful bokeh or blurry background
that I personally love. The camera works so well in low lighting situations
as it alows you to increase your ISO to 12800!!! Imagine that.

I am by no means a trained photographer. My husband can attest how
often I say ‘a real photographer would have had their camera with them to
capture that shot’. Well, now with the convenience of this small little camera,
I can pretend to be that ‘real photographer’ and capture the moments.
Moments that will be frozen in time and treasured in my heart.
Several of these photos were taken by my husband, who
thoroughly enjoyed using the SL1. His favourite feature is being able
to review and give the photos various filters right onto the camera.
The camera saves both the original and the one with the filter.
But I think what we were both most impressed with
was the HD, full broadcast quality of the camera.
So we made a little video for you…enjoy.
