Anthro inspired display dinnerware with DecoArt Gloss Enamels

Hi my sweet friends.  I hope you all had a good weekend.

We celebrated our youngest son’s 10th birthday this weekend and I finally got to see ‘Dark Knight Rising’….sooooo good! 🙂

Hubby had taken the boys to see it when it first came out and was eager for me to see it…now I understand why. 

As you know, I have been taking a little break from blogging as I try to spend some precious time with the kiddies.  But last week, I received a package in the mail from DecoArt.  I love receiving packages from them as I know the contents will send me into a creativity high….

 This time I received the various 
Glass Enamel paints.

Admittedly, I have never worked with enamel paints before and it took a little experimenting to achieve the results I wanted.  I also tend to be my biggest critic so even though hubby would throw in a ‘cute’ here and there while working on a piece, I ended up washing off the paint several times. I realize that I was trying to reinvent the wheel…

If you have been reading for a while, you likely know that I love to paint with watercolor and particularly love painting flowers (you can go here or here to see some of my past work).

So I decided to go with what I’m comfortable with, but looked to Anthropologie for some inspiration…

The smaller plate on the right was my inspiration and with the magic of photo editing, I was able to virtually incorporate it into my own photo. Neat huh? 

I purchased a couple of white ceramic plates at the DS and got to work… 

1) Prepared the surface by washing with some dish soap and water (you can also apply some rubbing alcohol with a paper towel).
2) As the consistency of the paint is thick, I diluted with some water to get a watercolor effect.
3) ‘Dropped’ some of the paint onto the top of the plate and held it upright so the paint would drip towards the bottom. Allowed the paint to dry for a few minutes (but if you want to expedite the drying process, you can use a hair dryer set to medium or a table fan).
4) I then went to work by using the paints just like normal acrylic paints. The paint goes on very translucent so in order to acquire a darker more vivid shade, allow paint to dry in between and apply layers. 
5) Allow paint to cure for 4 days. 
6) Place in non preheated oven at 275F for 30 minutes and allow to cool with oven door open.

Please note that even though the paint is non-toxic, it is not recommended for food use. 

I also combined DecoArt glass writer pens to draw a design and then filled it with the 3D frost paint. 

Dab a little bit of paint from the writer tip….


…and then spread the paint with a natural bristle brush.

Here is the plate after two layers of paint. I like the contrast of the black and white and the pop of colour…

 I used the new 3D paint to create this fun patterned plate….


If you’re not overly comfortable with your free hand abilities, DecoArt also 
offers an array of stick on stencils specifically made to be used for this paint. 

The possibilities are endless…

  12. Beautiful! I bought some enamel paints not long ago to use on a cake plate but it’s been on the back burner for awhile. I think you may have inspired me to actually make it happen now!

  13. I am so glad I found you. You are truly amazing. I so want to serve on these plates not using forks or knives but just cookies, etc. Any suggestions, please.
    someone told me to use Future acrylic floor finish after the paint is cured. What do you think?
