Gramps,

It’s only been a day since you left, yet we miss you dearly.  How was your trip?  Is heaven like we picture it? 

Today our hearts ache, but we take solace knowing you are in better hands.  We know that if you were here, you would say ‘Don’t worry about it, I’m okay…I’ll just get on with it’.  And we know you are; you are more than okay as you are home now. 

Look for the star Gramps…when you see it, you’ll know you’re safe…you’ll know you’re home.

We love you and miss you.

Our beloved ‘Gramps’ peacefully passed away yesterday afternoon after a brave fight with cancer.  He was alongside his loving children who watched over him day and night until his last breath.  

My sweet friends, we thank you for your prayers and words of hope during these past few months.  Your prayers helped us get through and we appreciate it from the bottom of our hearts.

ps. I’m not sure what heaven looks like, but I have a feeling that for our sweet Gramps, heaven might look a little like this…..

  2. I’m so sad for you Lu! Death is so ugly and robs us of so much! Yet, we have comfort in knowing we will be together in Paradise! Praise God for that knowledge. No matter how prepared, it hurts, it is loss. I will continue to lift your family up to the healer of broken hearts. Love to all of you!

  5. I think heaven might be just a bit more beautiful then those pictures and gramps will see nothing but beauty and feel nothing but the love that you and your family feel for him. Gosh, he is a lucky man! My thoughts are with you and your family.

  9. Well, I am in tears because I know how much this special man meant to you and your family. And, although we know he is in a better place, our selfish nature wishes them back! I will be keeping you in my prayers this weekend as you jump over this first hurdle that loss presents.

    ps. SweetCheeks told me just the other day that when she was in Heaven BEFORE SHE WAS A BABY THING (her words) that everything was gold and glowy…(oh-and that she didn’t see ME there). Love to you, dear Lu~ xo Diana

At the end of CS Lewis’ Narnia series, when they all finally get to the new land, he describes it as being like Narnia, but clearer, sharper, more glorious, as though Narnia had been viewed through a fog. Such a terrific description of what Heaven must be: His creation as intended, unmarred by sorrow, pain, decay and sin. Your pictures are apt, I think. Thankful that in your grief, you have the comfort of knowing your dear “Gramps” is young and healthy again, enjoying the company of those he loved and who preceded him in that final journey. Will be praying for you and your family as you mourn his loss and celebrate his life.

  25. I am really sorry for your loss.I follow your blog regularly but have never commented before.I don’t know why!

    My family was going through the same situation as yours at the same time as you and I could very well relate to your blog posts.My dad has been fighting with cancer for the last one year or so and he passed away on the same day as your father in law.Isn’t it uncanny!
    Though it’s difficult for me to get to terms with not having him around now,I am also glad that he does not have to suffer anymore.I am sure your family feels the same and I am glad that both these people are in ‘better hands’.Condolences to you and your family.

    • I’m so sorry, it isn’t easy and there are moments of deep sorrow and moments of cherished happy memories. Time will heal our current hurt but will never allow us to forget…thank you for sharing your heart with me….I’m so sorry 🙁

    It’s difficult to lose a loved one (my mother passed on when I was 14).
    Loving is easy when everything is going right. To show and share love and kindness is more difficult when stress, anxiety, and sadness are present. Your posts over the last month have shown a dedication, kindness and love to an elder that is not common in today’s society. This warms my heart and I hope it fills up your and your family’s hearts as well.

    I’m sure you have heard it before, Gramps is in beautiful place, where suffering and darkness do not reign, where love and light surrounds you, and peace holds you tight.
